Surface ozone at Nam Co in the inland Tibetan Plateau: variation, synthesis comparison and regional representativeness

چکیده
Ozone is an important pollutant and greenhouse gas, and tropospheric ozone variations are generally associated with both 15 natural and anthropogenic processes. As one of the most pristine and inaccessible regions in the world, the Tibetan Plateau has been considered as an ideal region for studying processes of the background atmosphere. Due to the vast area of the Tibetan Plateau, sites in the southern, northern and central regions exhibit different patterns of variation in surface ozone. Here, we present continuous measurements of surface ozone mixing ratios at Nam Co Station over a period of ~5 years (January 2011 to October 2015), which is a background site in the inland Tibetan Plateau. An average surface ozone mixing ratio of 47.6±11.6 20 ppb (mean ± standard deviation) was recorded, and a large annual cycle was observed with maximum ozone mixing ratios in the spring and minimum ratios during the winter. The diurnal cycle is characterized by a minimum in the early morning and a maximum in the late afternoon. Nam Co Station represents a background region where surface ozone receives negligible local anthropogenic emissions inputs, and the anthropogenic contribution from South Asia in spring and China in summer may affect Nam Co Station occasionally. Surface ozone at Nam Co Station is mainly dominated by natural processes involving 25 photochemical reactions, vertical mixing and downward transport of stratospheric air mass. Model results indicate that the study site is affected differently by the surrounding areas in different seasons: air masses from the southern Tibetan Plateau contribute to the high ozone levels in the spring and enhanced ozone levels in the summer are associated with air masses from the northern Tibetan Plateau. By comparing measurements at Nam Co Station with those from other sites in the Tibetan Plateau, we aim to expand the understanding of ozone cycles and transport processes over the Tibetan Plateau. This work may provide 30 a reference for future model simulations. 2

متن کاملInteractive comment on “Surface ozone at Nam Co (4730 m a.s.l.) in the inland Tibetan Plateau: variation, synthesis comparison and regional representativeness” by Xiufeng Yin et al
GENERAL COMMENTS This work by Yin et al. presents an overview of about 5 years of continuous near-surface ozone observations at the Nam Co station which is located in the central Tibetan Plateau. The scope of the paper is rather ambitious: to characterize the typical variability of near-surface O3 at this measurement site, to compare it with other sites in the Tibetan Plateau (and beyond) and t...
متن کاملTwo-year measurements of surface ozone at Dangxiong, a remote highland site in the Tibetan Plateau.
Measurements of surface O3 and carbon monoxide (CO) were made from September 2009 to August 2011 at Dangxiong (30.48°N, 91.10°E, 4187 m a.s.l.), a remote highland site in a southern valley of the Nyainqêntanglha Mountains in the Tibetan Plateau, China. The monthly mean O3 mixing ratio ranged from 29.1 to 51.4 ppb, with an average of 38.5 ppb, and the maximum value was observed in May. The avera...
متن کاملVariations in water level and glacier mass balance in Nam Co lake, Nyainqentanglha range, Tibetan Plateau, based on ICESat data for 2003ÂŒ09
Water level fluctuations of inland lakes are related to regional-scale climate changes, and reflect variations in evaporation, precipitation and glacier meltwater flowing into the lake area in its catchment. In this paper, Ice, Cloud and land Elevation Satellite (ICESat) altimeter data and Landsat imagery (2002–09) are used to estimate Nam Co lake (Nyainqentanglha range, Tibetan Plateau) water ...
متن کاملInfluence of air mass downward transport on the variability of surface ozone at Xianggelila Regional Atmosphere Background Station, southwest China
In situ measurements of ozone (O3), carbon monoxide (CO) and meteorological parameters were made from December 2007 to November 2009 at the Xianggelila Regional Atmosphere Background Station (28.006 N, 99.726 E; 3580 m a.s.l.), southwest China. It was found that both O3 and CO peaked in spring while the minima of O3 and CO occurred in summer and winter, respectively. A normalized indicator (mar...
